A New Approach
Barefoot Spas was founded in 1975 by David Shoaf. At that time, David kept his customers in the Richmond, Virginia area warm by manufacturing wood stoves. He wanted to expand his business to include a hot tub and spa line but found that most US manufacturers were based on the west coast. Rather than settle for limited options, David decided he would build his own line of spas.
As business grew, David sought to eliminate unnecessary marks ups. To do so, he modified his business plan to include bringing his product directly to customers in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible, without a dealer mark-up. This began a travelling road show of sorts that took place at local venues, close to his customers and provided options for immediate delivery.
